Great work!! we hail from ratnagiri n whenever i’ve taken mom out for a sea-food treat here in the city, we’ve had trouble ordering for the right one in english.. this should help.. by the way.. my mom also mentions that she loves “morvasa” fish.. would you by any chance be able to find out the english name for this one? thx

Shailendra Karekar……..Jawla are not baby lobsters. Although both jawla and lobsters are decapod crustaceans, they belong to different sub-orders and families. Jawla belongs to the genus Acetes and its correct scientific name is Acetes indicus. Whereas, lobsters belong to the family Homaridae which include many genera. The ones found on Maharashtra coast are rock lobsters (Panulirus homarus) and sand lobsters (Thenus orientalis).
Onkar…..The English name of “sakala” is Cobia (Rachycentron canadum)
When it comes to seafoods, i really love shelfish and shrimps.

Surmai or Viswan is called Seer in English

Its called king mackerel or popularly (spotted) seer fish.
It is known by various names, such as Surmai (सुरमई) in Marathi, Vanjaram(వంజరం) in Telugu,Vanjaram NeiMeen (நெய்மீன்) in Tamil, NeiMeen (നെയ്മീന്) in Malayalam, Anjal (ಅಂಜಲ್) in Tulu, Arkoli (ಅರ್ಕೊಲಿ) in Kannada, Iswaan in Konkani and Thora in Sinhala.
Mackerel is called Bangda in Marathi. King Mackerel is a giant cousin of Mackerel which is found in Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. I doubt it is caught near India.
Sardine is also called Tarle in Marathi

In western coast, we called the fish as Khajoori Fish.

Rani fish is called goatfish in English and its generic name is Upeneus. There are several species in this genus. Don’t know exactly which species you used in your laboratory studies, but most probably it could either be U. sulphureus (Sulphur goatfish) or U. vittatus (Striped goatfish).

Komat is local name of Asian Seabass (Lates calcarifer). This name is more popular in Shreevardhan area of Raigad district and north Ratnagiri. In other parts of Raigad, it is known as Jitada. In yet some other parts of the district, it is also called khajoora or goori.

Plaice are flatfishes found in North America and Europe. True plaices are not found in India. We have their counterparts over here such as the soles and halibuts. The scientific name of the Indian halibut is Psettodes erumei. I’m not sure about its Hindi name but the Marathi name is “bhakas” (भाकस).
Soles are called “Lep” (लेप) in Marathi.

Dr. Bhatkar, your name indicates your origins are from Goa. Whilst in Vasco, I had come across one exotic fish served in local restaurants. Its called ‘CHANAK’ OR ‘CHONAK’. I dont find it here in Mumbai ( or may be it is known by a different name here ). Could you please throw some light ?
Also can you tell me the difference between, Shell Fish & Khube – if any ? One more specimen in that catagory is called ‘Fennani’

Mr Ajgaokar, the fish referred to as Chonok in Goa is referred to as Jitada in Mumbai & Raigad. It’s the same fish the Bengalis call Bhetki. Apparently, it’s commercial name is Cock-up. In Bangladesh, there are 3 different names for this fish in three stretches of it’s range!
